Who plays With Barbies? was a paper I wrote in the Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies course that was taught by Professor Joanne Quimby. Students were required to visit a toy store, select one specific toy to study, and write a paper including course topics relating to the social construction of gender. I chose the Barbie doll. In the paper, I addressed the set up/layout of the store/toy section and what the toy tells us about gender and gender socialization. Other requirements for the paper included describing the type of packaging and the potential messages it reflects about gender roles, gender stereotypes, race, ethnicity, and social class. Finally, I discussed the gender socialization process and how children are socialized into gender roles through their interaction with toys.
