Thinking Outside the Gender Box was a project I completed in Professor Joanne Quimby’s Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies course. For the project, students were asked to create a proposal for a liberating act that challenges a stereotype or problem, execute the plan, write a paper documenting the process and results, and present a summary to the class. I focused on the question, how does society reinforce typical gender stereotypes, by asking classmates to complete two exercises: first, by identifying masculine and feminine traits and then to read and reflect on a series of quotes relating to gender. After each student completed the two tasks, I asked a few follow up questions and documented the responses.
