In the capstone seminar class for the Women's and Gender Studies program, Professor Lisa Moore assigned a reflection that asked students to write about an idea or concept that can be linked to media content and course material. As a class, we watched a TedTalk given by Roxane Gay, an African American feminist. While her perspective does not fit into a specific category of feminism, she draws from ideas that the intersectionality of multiple forms of identities combine, overlap, and intersect with each other. In order words, our multiple identities blend together to establish a basis for our desire to recognize and value difference and to work toward equality across the spectrum of race, class, culture, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, sexuality, and education. Other feminists like Kimberle Crenshaw (who coined the term intersectionality), Anna J. Cooper, and Angela Davis have built their feminist positions by embracing ideas of intersectionality.
